Dear Visitors at Christmas.

Dear Visitors at Christmas,

Dont be suprised if my house is a mess,
The floor is all dirty, children not dressed
I can’t do the hoovering, it is too loud,
There’s already too much noise around,
We don’t sing the carols or turn on the lights,
We have to do, what for us, feels right.

Don’t be offended if she won’t open your gift,
We know that she’ll like it, it was on her list,
She’s not being rude, or being a brat,
When she puts it on a pile saying ‘I don’t want that,”
I know that she comes across as impolite,
We have to do, what for us, feels right.

Don’t be shocked if she is loud or abrupt
When your having conversations she will interrupt,
She may come across as bossy and aggressive,
This is her space, she is very possessive,
We will call her name if she starts to bite,
We have to do, what for us, feels right.

Don’t feel upset when you’re saying Goodbye,
If she won’t give you a kiss, or look in your eyes,
If she shouts at you telling you to go away,
Don’t touch, it may be painful, she might runaway,
We don’t do hugs and kisses goodnight,
We have to do, what for us, feels right.

Don’t feel embarassed when we talk about Autism,
We want you to understand; please try to listen,
She’s not in control, she’s not being naughty,
She is not intentionally ignoring everybody,
We don’t make a fuss or put up a fight,
We have to do, what for us, feels right.

Please accept that Christmas, whilst it is a fun time,
Your experiences will be very different to mine,
My girl will fall apart and have numerous meltdowns,
Too many sights and smells and sounds,
We don’t sing the carols, or turn on the lights,
We have to do, what for us, feels right.

Signed,
Our Autism Mum.
